The Cottage
Every family has a place like this. A story about legacy, memories, and what happens when we stop tending the places — and people — that matter most.
The lake cottage. The hunting camp. The little cabin where summers seemed endless and everyone gathered without needing a reason.
At one time, it represented a dream. The place everyone believed would stay in the family forever.
But here’s what I’ve learned.
Most families never decide to let it go.
Life just happens.
Children grow up. Careers become demanding. Grandchildren have games. Vacations get shorter.
One summer becomes two. Then five.
The porch needs repair. The weeds grow a little taller.
Eventually, as the laughter fades, nature slowly reclaims what families stop tending.
Nature has a way of reclaiming what we stop tending.
Families aren’t so different.
That old cottage taught me something I’ll never forget.
A legacy is rarely lost in one moment. It’s lost one missed weekend, one busy season, one generation at a time.
The legal documents matter.
But the greatest legacy isn’t the deed. It’s the memories that gave the place meaning.
Is there a place like this in your family?
I’d love to hear its story.
